In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. Genesis 1:1-3 ESV
God created all that we see around us. The sky, the earth, the seas; everything was created by Him and He considered it good. What an awesome story to share with little ones about how they and the earth were created. You can always share the story straight from the Bible itself, or you can add some illustrations and rhymes with this book we’re discussing today, “First He Made the Sun” by Harriet Ziefert.

“First He Made the Sun” is a book based on the creation story in Genesis 1. The story is told in rhyme and simplifies the creation of various animals, places and eventually the creation of Adam himself. it is a simple hard cover book that allows parents the opportunity to read easily with their child and explain in more detail what is happening as the book progresses.

The hand-painted illustrations by Todd McKie are simple yet whimsical. They are not too complicated but lean toward a more abstract interpretation of the scene being set in the rhymes. They are colorful and eye-catching. Small children especially, will enjoy the wide range of colors that are used throughout this book. There is also a lot to look at. As you are reading this book to your child, feel free to point out all the different characters present on each page. I know my little one was very interested in all of the different colors set out before him.

The book is simple enough for really small kids to enjoy it. Even bed babies would be interested in at least the vibrant colors throughout. Asking your smaller kids that are learning their animals to name the different ones throughout would be a fun activity as well while you’re reading.

Overall this is a cute way to present the creation story to your child in a fun, simple form that they can easily understand. I would definitly recommend for kids 0-3 years.
