Baby Laughs = Approval Cravings

So, your baby is now laughing. It is a wonderful sound isn’t it? You do everything in your power to make that sound happen for as long and as often as possible. I know, I am guilty. I have danced around, made myself sound like a cartoon, made the weirdest noises in front of random people all so I could hear that beautiful sound. I need to hear the sound. I’m jonesing for it, I crave it. But why though?

I’ll tell you why. We crave that sound for the simple fact that we want our babies to like us. It is that simple. We want our offspring to approve of us and at this stage in their life the only sign of approval they can articulate is to laugh at us. We eat that up. Don’t act like you don’t love it. You know you’re jonesing for it too.

There’s nothing wrong with wanting to have the approval of your baby. It means they are satisfied with your level of care. Right now, they don’t dress, feed, bathe or even walk themselves so that leave us, the parents aka the caregivers. We do our best to meet the various needs and their approval is shown through smiles and laughs. I don’t know about you but I would like my approval rating to be as high as possible. If that means wiggling around and making crazy faces to get, so be it. I think most parents would tend to agree with me on that one.

A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.” (Proverbs 17:22 ESV) I don’t want a dried up baby. I want my baby to be squishy and joyful and laughing his diaper off for as long as I can make it happen. Am I right or am I right?
